23 years ago, after a pathetic presentation I had just given at
work, my boss called me in and said "Darryl, you will never move up in
this organization unless you conquer your fears of public speaking. If you
expect to get in to management, you have to be able to make effective
presentations. I'll give you some advice - Join this organization called
Toastmasters". I took his advice to heart and with much
trepidation at the time, joined one of the best TM clubs in the country - Jewel City
29 Toastmasters in Glendale,
CA.
My boss' advice that day was among the best I have ever
received. I can say without any doubt, without any hesitation, that my
decision to join Toastmasters was the best career move I have ever
made. And it is not just Public Speaking skills that a member of
Toastmasters learns, but also Thinking, Listening and Leadership
skills.
I can truly say that all
of these attributes are what I have gained from being part of this
great organization called Toastmasters. Also, besides the
professional benefits, the camaraderie I have come to enjoy within our club
and the lasting friendships made over the years are yet another reason to
continue my membership in this club for more than two decades.

I have been a member of
Toastmasters for nearly 2 years and it’s one of the best decisions I
have ever made. My decision to join was due to ever-increasing frustration
with getting flustered and nervous when speaking in front of small groups.
This was affecting my ability to clearly communicate at work, and
communication is extremely important in my profession.
The progress I have made in less
than 2 years is evident to my co-workers, my fellow Toastmasters, my family
and myself. In fact, I just completed a presentation to my company’s
president and the senior executives who report to her. There is no doubt in
my mind that the success of this presentation resulted from my involvement
with Toastmasters!
